Resort Overview
When the late Harry Melling decided that Sylvan Resort needed to jump into the golf business, he didn’t tiptoe into the industry, he hired none other than Robert Trent Jones, Sr. One of the most influential names in golf course architecture
Jones had designed about 500 golf courses worldwide. When Jones stepped foot onto this property in the mid-1980s and happened upon the perch overlooking the Pigeon River Valley on what today is hole #6, he quipped to Melling and Rick Smith, “all I can see are the tops of trees, you should call this place Treetops.” At once, Sylvan Resort became the world-class four-season resort, Treetops.
When the “Masterpiece” opened in 1986, it debuted with the highest slope rating of any course in all of Michigan and remains today as one of the state’s most challenging courses. Of all of the masterful Jones designs across the globe, RTJ referred to his Treetops’ design as his “Masterpiece”.
